What to see in Vilnius?2017-12-14 12:54 Peržiūros : 131 Spausdinti
Remarkable and agile minds have assembled in Vilnius to make it the city with a unique entertainment industry. To save the readers' time, we have selected the most interesting attractions; facts, places and events that will ease your task of getting acquainted with Vilnius. Some of them you will not be able to enjoy anywhere but in Vilnius. We tried to paint a picture of what might aforeigner like depending on his origin, however no doubts, everybody is welcomed to enjoy all the attractions.
Vilnius for Americans and other visitors from the West.
Not that long ago, current Americans had left their motherland 's cosy fields, cities of narrow alleys and moved to the US. They left a deep footprint in the US architecture, shaping their own monumental and modern style. So, if Lithuania is having the Guggenheim Museum one day, I do not think it would be the place for an American to see. However, Vilnius Old Town would definitely be worth showing. Vilnius has not suffered from the wars and fires, its unique diversity of architecture remained. Fortunately, during the Second World War American bombers have not been flying over Lithuania, and the Germans pursued by Bagration did never get time to build defensive lines. Vilnius' old town has not been harmed much, which will peak the interest not only of Americans but also of eastern Slavs, who lack such architectural wonders.
We shall begin the introduction to the Old Town with our hunger relieved and start with a visit to a restaurant. Satiated traveler is a calm traveler, one that pays attention to detail, instead of suppressing revolution of an empty stomach. A Lithuanian dish? Not exactly, majority of dishes on offer are peasant dishes with some German, Tartar (Karaites), Slavic, Jewish origins. These will not leave guests with the mouth open in surprise, well, unless we want them to be weighted down by a large Cepelinai (big dumplings made of potato dough and minced meat), covered in bacon gravy. Rest assured, a traveler will then search for a place to sit down.
It is advisable to choose from the classic dishes from local materials, preferably from rarities. You can drop in any of the restaurants in Vilnius Old Town, sit in a terrace, checking out long-legged girls' beauty, especially on the open terrace and if the weather is suitable for it. Old town is a fine exposition of such beauties. For Southerners, such place could mark the end of a journey.
'Bunte Gans' and 'Galo do Porto' (Aušros vartų Street. 11). These two restaurants belong to the same group. We begin with a steak from bulls raised in local fields, or venison of a freshly hunted deer. Steaks served in these restaurants are known for their huge number of returning customers. Famous pâté of mushrooms, and chicken-goose liver will not be a surprise for an occasional visitor of restaurants of Paris, but a middle-class American used to filling their bellies with fast food, might be fascinated.
Restaurant 'Žuvinė', located next to the City Hall in Vilnius, is a place where the guest will be pleasantly surprised by fresh fish meals, caught in natural waters. Fish, grown in the waters of Lithuania, do not have the aftertaste of algae. Look for fresh zander, European catfish, or tench to fascinate your guests with unique taste.
After leaving the square of the City Hall, we are heading for the Gate of Dawn. If it is not dark, it is worth taking a moment to appreciate the panorama of Vilnius. Not so far from the Gate of Dawn, there is a Subacius viewpoint, from which almost the whole Old Town of Vilnius opens up. Heading down from the viewpoint and towards district of 'Užupis', making a few stops there, head towards Church of St. Anne. After the church, it is worth going back to the Old Town, the guest might enjoy the narrow Literatu alley. While trailing through the alley we come out on Pilies Street, which is close to the Church St. Johns. If you go up the Bell Tower, from its top magnificent view of the Old Town of Vilnius is revealed.
Hike further, following the narrow alleys of Stikliu, Didžiosios, Vokiečiu, Mėsiniu or St. Mikalojaus street towards a bar-restaurant 'Šnekutis'. If an American will state that beer is not his drink, do not be surprised, they simply do not have beer.
The real beer is in the bar-restaurant 'Šnekutis'. Collected from various small breweries of Lithuania, the beer should be the journey's cherry on the top. Also, it is highly possible that the Lithuanian drink 'Midus' (meed) has not been tasted by any of your guests.
Vilnius for a British man
Even though half of Lithuania's working age population works in Great Britain, only a few can boast of friendship with a real British man. British entertainment is highly dependent on their age. Younger generation of Brits, and those that feel themselves British, behave like baby beavers, ran away from their mother's cave. They try to mimic a middle-class adult, and laugh it up in a pub. Oddly, as if they don't have enough of them in the United Kingdom, Vilnius's pubs might impress them as well. First, their stomachs must be filled up, to avoid a knockdown by the third pint on the empty stomach. The already mentioned 'Šnekutis 'pub is a perfect place to draw first blood, and to taste the famous pigs' ear at the same time. A perfect dish to prepare your tummy for a spar with the alcohol industry. Round two could be a visit to 'Bunte Gans'. There you will also find dishes fitting the Swabian Zoller Hof beer. According to some wannabe experts, it is one of the best beers found in Lithuania.
A pub-crawl till the break of dawn. The first stop could be a 'Gringo' pub, a pleasant visit will be assured by a free and friendly atmosphere prevailing in the pub. The next stop could be 'Marsas', located in the Traku Street 15, a pub, well-beloved by artists. There you can grab a bite too. Further down the same street, on the north end of it you will find 'Alaus biblioteka'(The Library of beer). The beer prices are slightly higher, however, it is worth paying for as their beer has received glowing reviews. A wide selection of beer will surprise the Brits, and a beer tasting evening is available for booking here. Further down, in the Aušros vartai Street, lays the'Portobello' pub. A visit can be paid to a 'Plius' pub, which attracts a younger audience. The beer prices are lower, and majority of the audience are students. And finally, pub 'Peronas' might be our exotic icing on the cake. It is a beer pub situated next to the train station with the view to trains passing by. Lookout for a live music event or a DJ's performance.
We are coming back following the grounds already covered, popping in the 'Brusly' pub, for a taste of Belgian food. The pub is open on Fridays and Saturdays until 5 am.
Vilnius for Germans
How to impress a neat and clean, law-abiding German? Well, they have their own copious beers and good food.
Now it remains only to try something forbidden in most west European cities, but not in Vilnius. That is hot air ballooning.
Because of the air currents, hot air balloons are launched before the dusk sets. Depending on direction of the wind, the launch pad is chosen. A gust of wind carries launched hot air balloons over Vilnius. The fascinating view opens up while flowing over Vilnius' Old Town. Keep your eyes open to catch the most beautiful shot.
Vilnius for Scandinavians
Scandinavians are hard to surprise. The contemporary kitchen, serving meats and vegetables from the surround farms, is of Scandinavian origin. They already have beautiful green cities, and yet, nothing to be compared with the network of our Old Town's narrow alleys, built for a tour that will impress. And why not engage a Scandinavian into a gambling game if we assume escape rooms being such kind of a game. Each and one of the escape rooms have something unique and extraordinary to offer. Even though Stockholm has large numbers of escape rooms, it doesn't mean that they will be the same as the one on Gluosniu Street 13, or any other escape room from that can be found here.
Having increased the levels of adrenaline, we finally can go to discover Vilnius nightlife. If you are looking for a rather and informal place to discuss business material, then 'Jazz Club Cellar 11' is your best bet. Cozy environment, the late-working kitchen is a reason for your guest to be impressed. The 'Jazz Club' belongs to the same group of 'Buga' restaurants which I hope you have started the visit to Vilnius at. Live jazz music creates free and relaxing atmosphere, making the time slow down. The club has plenty of regular customers, make sure to reserve the table in advance.
Only the best jazz performers are invited to 'Jazz Club Cellar 11'. Musicians praise the quality of technical equipment and customers praise the fantastic food and wonderful musicians.
Vilnius for the French
Vilnius seldom gets visitors from France. On top of what has been suggested above, why not offer a bicycle ride? Somehow the combination of a Frenchman and a bicycle or a Frenchwoman and a bicycle harmoniously fits together. For a wonderful afternoon, Verkiai park is the right place for a ride-a-bike-day. The park has a great number of bicycle lanes, following them you can catch some interesting sights, and of course burn some calories.
Vilnius for Russians and Belarussians
For the reason of misleading truths about Russia, some of the Russians, who are not acquainted with the country that well, may feel uncomfortable communicating in Russian. Therefore, it might be a good idea to spend more time with them at less public places. We really have what to offer in Vilnius.
Why not invite our guests to the SPA, or a beauty salon? Though, if a man invites a lady to get a lymphatic drainage massage, she will probably be offended. However, if men are out fishing, ladies can spoil their bodies with apparatus cosmetology. There is so much on offer: facial skin tightening, anti-aging procedures, wrinkle reduction, liposuction around waistline, thighs or buttocks, as well enhancement of breast or glutes. Everything is possible nowadays even without any surgical intervention only by using ultrasound cavitation procedures, lymphodrenage procedures, laser therapy procedures, vacuum therapy procedures and God knows what other procedures. Just a few hours of massages and look, next time men are not going to rush fishing.
Vilnius for Polish
I am wondering if your guest is highly religious as majority of Poles are? A tour around our churches will do. During excursion through Vilnius, you will surely see lots of them on our way. I suggest entering Kazimieras' church. As majestic as it looks from the outside, the inside will impress them even more. Concerts are often held in the church with children and youth choirs regularly performing. Wonderful church acoustics will create a pleasant atmosphere to leave a pious Pole in an elated euphoria. Later we might engage in a lightly sinful expression of gluttony in 'Galo de Porto' restaurant, situated close by. God will forgive us for ordering a portion of cataplana with a glass of a good port wine. We can also pop in 'Bunte Gans' ordering a german wienerschnitzel with a pint of Zoller Hof beer.
I believe that 'Galo do Porto' will impress not only Polish but also different nationalities guests with the traditional Portuguese stew called cataplana. Cataplana is a seafood dish cooked in a copper cookware. Make sure to try a fried sandwich francesinha and an egg tart pastry Pasteis de Nata.
Vilnius for Japanese
What to show for the Japanese, maybe the Japanese exposition held in the botanical gardens of Kairėnai? It is certainly worth visiting the gardens of Vilnius University and check the abundant collections of flowers and bushes. The park is wonderfully equipped with pathways and places to eat.
Or maybe it is worth to invite them to a Japanese restaurant. Why not, especially when a modern Northern cuisine restaurant will be found on the second floor - 'Bizzare', a uniquely designed restaurant with professional cooks running the kitchen. I believe the Japanese people, who are widely known as gourmets, would find it interesting to sample their traditional dishes made of fresh products from Lithuanian farmers. In recent years, local Northern cuisine is flourishing in many new restaurants
The Japanese will appreciate theart on the plate such as dishes made of fresh chanterelles, tartar, or beefsteaks and desserts, of course, designed only by professional chefs.
The restaurant 'Bizarre' will please you with its' interesting interior and excellent cuisine. Bartenders are making natural cocktails, even syrups might be home-made. It is certainly worth paying a visit.

'Mojo lounge' is a nightclub of different music styles. From Thursdays to Saturdays the club hosts live music events. The club is open until 5 am. The club visitors usually are stylish people of middle age.
